JAKARTA: The police said Wednessday they had arrested 20 suspects and were still hunting 10 others in their investigation into the massive ATM scams.

They were arrested in various places throughout the country, chief detective Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi said. "We are pursuing 10 people we believe have played significant roles in the crime."

He said the police had recently received reports of similar crimes from bank customers in Lampung and Bandung.

However, they found no indication the scams in the two cities were linked to the tech-savvy perpetrators in Kuta, Bali, who managed to retrieve information of bank customers' personal savings.

"Please be patient. We will arrest the perpetrators," he said.

The Bali police reported that as of Wednesday the number of victims of fraudulent ATM transactions at the resort island had reached 43 people. - JP
