President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono reminded protesters on Thursday to
hold peaceful rallies and avoid scuffles to prevent negative impacts on
the economy.
Yudhoyono said that he forbid any damage to be made, burning stunts, actions leading to casualties and forced occupation of public facilities during the demonstration. If such things happened, he warned the situation could turn into a riot as happened in 1998.
“We certainly don’t want our economy to crash, which could cause trouble to the people, do we?” Yudhoyono said during his trip to Pandeglang, Banten.
Thousands of people held rallies nationwide today to mark 100 days of Yudhoyono’s presidency.
The protests so far have proceeded peacefully across the country, except some incidents in some places.
In Makassar, South Sulawesi, for example, university students burned used tires and threw rocks at the office of state-owned PT Perkebunan Nusantara XIV office. (nkn)
