JAKARTA: South Jakarta municipal administration inaugurated Thursday a flood-free communal bathing, washing and toilet facility in flood-prone Petogogan, South Jakarta, established to help locals gain access to clean water during flood periods.

The 45-square-meter facility jointly funded by the USAID, the US NGO Mercy Corps, and Environmental Services Program (ESP), has six toilets, a bathroom and a communal space for washing clothes.

"The facility can serve up to 120 families," ESP spokesman Harod Rahmad Novandi told The Jakarta Post.

When floods comes, the facility, built 1.5 meters higher than the nearby ground, could also accomodate around 60 refugees, Harod added. - JP
