JAKARTA: The Independent Journalists Alliance (AJI) Jakarta chapter regretted the mass lay off on 144 workers of local newspaper Berita Kota and considered it a portrait of industry's brutality.
"There is something awkward about the layoff process because it was not initiated by a discussion between management and wor kers, this one-sided layoff is banned by the 2003 Labor Law," AJI Chairman Wahyu Dhyatmika said in a press statement received by The Jakarta Post on Friday.
The incident was generated by the acquisition of PT Penamas Pewarta, a company that published Berita Kota, by PT Metrogema Media Nusantara a subsidiary of Kompas Gramedia Group.
According to the AJI, there were not enough reasons to undertake the layoff according to the requirements set by the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry or industrial relation court.
Therefore the AJI urged the new management to fulfill their workers' rights as regulated by the law and asked the Jakarta Manpower Services to supervise the case. - JP
