The Medan police arrested on Saturday 26 illegal immigrants from war-torn Afghanistan, who are likely to seek asylum in Australia.
During questioning the asylum seekers said they fled Afghanistan because they could no longer withstand the situation there. They chose Indonesia due to its active role in international peace processes.
One of the illegal immigrants, Zaki, told Antara he traveled to Indonesia by sea and arrived in the North Sumatra capital city only on Saturday. "Indonesia is considered a safe country," he said of the reason to flee his country.
The police are detaining the foreigners to facilitate an investigation into the case.
