Hundreds of elementary school students in Central Aceh have been unable to attend classes after a magnitude-5 earthquake on Thursday night severely damaged their school buildings.

Spokesman for the regional administration Windi Darsa said Saturday at least 16 schools had been closed following the quake, which shook most part of Central Aceh.

He said the local government was in need of financial assistance to provide tents for the students.

“For the sake of safety, the school buildings have been closed. We expect the provincial government or other donors to help us erect emergency tents to keep the learning activities going,” Windi was quoted by Antara news agency.

The quake also affected hundreds of houses, health centers and other public facilities. Material losses from the disaster are estimated at Rp 5.3 billion.
