Adisutjipto International Airport in Yogyakarta will be developed to more than double its current size, to meet an increasing number of air passengers flying to and from the royal city.
Halendra, the operational manager of airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I, said the expanded airport would cover an area of 18,000 square meters, as compared to the current 8,000 square meters.
“Adisutjipto airport's development and expansion is being carried out to meet increasing air traffic, both domestic and international, to and from Yogyakarta,” Halendra said as quoted by Kompas.com.
After the 2006 earthquake, the airport was renovated to a new capacity of 1 million passengers per year. Since the renovation, however, passenger numbers increased rapidly to 2.8 million in 2008 and 3.2 million in 2009.
“We have several contractors that have submitted designs, and we are currently working on the tender process, which normally takes about 45 days,” Halendra said.
