JAKARTA: Legal representative of pop band Gigi hasn’t yet reported the alleged copyright violation by a production house of Gigi’s Ya Ya Ya single.
Production house Multivision Plus (MVP) reportedly used Gigi’s Ya Ya Ya song in its film Toilet 105.
Gigi’s lawyer Mada R. Mardanus said Gigi band members were surprised no one from MVP had bothered contacting them to ask for permission to use the song.
“We were dumbfounded this could ever happen. Especially because MVP is an established [company].
“And how on earth could they slip up and forget to credit Gigi after using their song?” Mada said as quoted by www.kapanlagi.com.
If brought to court, Mada said MVP’s use of someone’s song without obtaining the permission was punishable with a seven years in prison and a fine of up to Rp 5 billion (US$530,000).
“If it was mass produced and distributed, then they [MVP] could be sentenced to three years in prison and required to pay a Rp 500 million fine,” he said.
He said Gigi was not rushing to report the alleged violation to the police and would wait and see how the film goes.
