Comments: Editorial: SBY, kick the ball!

A- A A+

The fate of two senior leaders is hanging in the balance pending the findings of the inquiry committee of the House of Representatives on the Bank Century bailout. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati is our reformation icon and Vice President Boediono a civil servant with a clean track record.

It will be heartbreaking if we have to see both of them go at a time when we cannot afford to lose either one of them. Their presence will assure the consistency and continuity of our economy.

Kicking a ball? You must be joking! I do not think that The Jakarta Post has listened carefully to SBY lately.

He asked the people of Indonesia to listen to his latest music CD on which he plays the guitar and sings his own songs: The SBY Song Book Number 3 (SBYSBN Tiga).

I am sure Aburizal Bakrie (band manager) and Taufik Kiemas (conductor) are already singing SBY's songs, perhaps somewhat out of tune, but that can't be helped.

Soon everybody will be singing Golkar's tune once again, probably without Boediono and Sri Mulyani.

They will go and live on Buru Island to listen to SBY's "Ku Yakin Sampai Di Sana", do some introspection and re-learn the rules of Pancasila, board and lodging provided by the TNI.

It has been interesting to see that several political parties which lost ground in the last election are now trying to disrupt the entire Indonesian government and economy.

They are apparently even trying to justify impeachment proceedings - a process that would undoubtedly set Indonesia back five years in economic development and progress towards a mature democracy.

Also in today's news, however, was a story that 20 percent of legislators and councilors don't pay any tax, or even have a tax ID number.

If the legislature is so keen to start impeachment proceedings, perhaps looking in a mirror would be a good starting point - it might even have the opposite effect of their current plan: impeaching government officials who don't pay taxes just might accelerate democracy and stimulate the economy!
