Coal firm output to grow by 40% next year

State-owned coal producer PT Bukit Asam expects to increase production by more than 46 percent next year following the expansion of the transport capacity of its railway system.

Bukit Asam expects to produce as much as 20.05 million tons of coal next year, up from this year’s production target of 14 million tons.

“The railway’s current transport capacity is at about 11.5 million tons. We expect to increase the capacity to 14.5 million tons next year,” said Achmad Sudarto, a corporate secretary at the company.

Bukit Asam’s existing railway system includes 167.6 kilometers of railway track connecting a mine in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra, to Kertapati Port and another 416.6 kilometers of track connecting Tanjung Enim and Tarahan Port.

Bukit Asam expects to continue increasing the railway capacity until it reaches 22.7 million tons by 2014.
