SEMARANG: With rice prices hiking by 20 percent within two months, the administration has been urged to carry out market operations so that more people can afford cheap rice.
The Jakarta Post observed the price at the wholesale market had increased by Rp 1,000 per kilogram.At retailers, it has risen by Rp 1,400.
Achmadi, a vendor at the Dargo wholesale market, said the prices began increasing last month, from Rp 200 per kilogram to Rp 1.000 per kilogram.
Low-price rice, which was previously Rp 4,700, is now priced at 5.700 per kilogram.
Legislator M. Haris said Thursday it was important market operations enabled people to afford rice.
