The Golkar Party, the largest government coalition partner, is in agreement with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the largest opposition bloc, in giving its preliminary conclusion on the Bank Century bailout case.
“Golkar affirms that the Bank Century case is a continuous violation of the law conducted by the bank’s owner together with a number of officials of the state monetary and fiscal authorities,” Golkar spokesperson at the House of Representatives inquiry committee probing the case, Agun Gunanjar Sudarsa, said in Jakarta on Monday.
Agun also said that his party had found at least 59 violations surrounding the bailout.
Golkar’s stance is far different than that of the Democratic Party, which had said that it found no trace of legal violations behind the bailout.
Also speaking before the committee was PDI-P spokesperson Eva Kusuma Sundari, who said Bank Indonesia officials had failed to prudentially monitor the bank from the beginning, when the bank was established through the merger of three ailing banks.
“Therefore, it is recommended for all law enforcement institutions to follow up on this case,” she said.
The case revolves around a bailout that ten folded to Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million) from its original estimation.
The bailout was issued in November 2008 by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and former Bank Indonesia governor, Boediono, now vice president.
