Issues: `China views Kashmir as a major dispute'

While Pakistan has been calling for the international community to help resolve the 62-year-old Kashmir dispute as per the wishes of the Kashmiri people, according to the United Nations resolutions, India has continued with its claims that Kashmir is an integral part of its nation. The world generally sees Kashmir as a land dispute between India and Pakistan. However, based on historical facts China is also a part of this complex issue to which a solution is essential for lasting peace in the region. China has been taking a different stance than India and views Kashmir as a separate entity and not an integral part of India.

The Indian media has reported in the past that China has been publishing tourist maps depicting Kashmir as a separate entity. Moreover, the Chinese consular department has been issuing visas to Kashmiris living in Indian-held Kashmir on a separate sheet of paper and not stamped in their passport claiming since Kashmir is a disputed region the Kashmiris are not considered Indian citizens and therefore should not be granted a visa on their Indian passport.

In November last year the Chinese authorities reiterated that they would continue issuing visas on a separate sheet as they believed that a solution to the Kashmir dispute was essential and should be solved through dialogue instead of continuing to idle. (By Laura Schuurmans, Beijing)

I commend the writer for writing such a fine, straightforward and (more importantly) unbiased article. I feel that not only should China intervene, but also play a role and be the deciding factor on this issue, since India can not practically challenge China in any possible way.

Along with China, the whole world should act and stop the killing of innocent Kashmiris. The only reason the international community is silent is because Muslims are the ones that are dying, if it was any other community, the whole world would make a huge issue out of it. Muslims need to unite and project the real image of these Indians!

India sent its forces into Kashmir on the pretext of maintaining peace in Indian-occupied Kashmir and now Indian forces are in Kashmir committing human rights violations armed with draconian laws which give them total impunity against any crime they commit!

Not only China and Pakistan, but the world should listen to these facts and act accordingly. Or else our era might be looked upon in the same manner that Hitler's era is looked upon now!

Not just China, but the entire world views Kashmir as a major issue! In fact, almost everyone other than India seems ready to settle the issue peacefully! But India knows that the country will not last after the separation of Kashmir and will break into fragments based on religion.

I disagree with the writer; Kashmir is not home to hard-core militant groups. The Kashmiris are fighting for their survival from the Indian oppression.

China is a permanent member of the Security Council of the UN and India aspires to be one.

Does India have the moral courage to ask for permanent membership of the UN Security Council when they have disregarded every UN resolution on Kashmir?

India regards Kashmir as a land issue and conveniently forgets the people of Kashmir.

It is time India solved this problem in the name of humanity and for the sake of world peace.

The writer continues to impress readers with her article on Kashmir. I must appreciate her concerns, which are purely on humanitarian grounds, to help Kashmiri people.

I don't need to add much, as the article is full of facts, however, will just request that some of the commentators not to get too excited and restrict themselves to discussion of the issue at hand.

The writer is right in pointing out that the world ignores the Kashmir problem since their economic interests outweigh human interests. India is the biggest democracy in the world due to its very large population and not because of the (democratic) principles it follows.

India has border disputes with nearly all its neighbors and has built a nuclear arsenal as a way to settle such disputes.

India's action has far-reaching effects on world peace.

The world community must persuade India to follow the principles of justice, democracy, human rights and fair play.

I think this issue needs far more attention than it is currently being given on local and global stage.

The Kashmiri people are going through immense misery while every side is scoring points - how ironic and shameful! Being British, I think the British have to be blamed as well, but Indian, with its mammoth power, has to listen to the Kashmiri people and will have to give in if they want independence (Just like we had to give independence to India and Pakistan).

As a third party, I am of the idea that India has a bigger role to play to solve this conflict.
