An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hit the southeast area of Gorontalo in northern part of Sulawesi Island on Tuesday morning. No casualties or damage have been reported.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported that the quake struck 150 kilometers southeast of Gorontalo, or about 250 kilometers southwest of Manado in North Sulawesi, at 7:13 a.m. Jakarta time (6:13 local time).

A 5.2-magnitude quake had also jolted the area early on Monday morning.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies along the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. In 2004, a massive quake off Sumatra Island triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people.
