The price of roses at Rawa Belong flower market in West Jakarta has increased up to fourfold ahead of Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year.

“We can sell local roses at Rp 100,000 [more than US$10] from the usual price of Rp 25,000 per 20 stems,” said Saiful Bahri, 24, a florist at the market, Tuesday.

He added that the price of imported Ecuador roses had doubled to Rp 500,000 per 20 stems while the so-called semi-Holland roses now cost between Rp 150,000 and Rp 200,000 for 20 compared to the usual price of Rp 75,000.

The local roses are mostly brought in from Malang, East Java while the semi-Holland roses are the variety of roses planted in Bandung, West Java, but the seeds are from the Netherlands.

The market has experienced a high demand of roses and other flowers, such as gladioli and tuberoses since the beginning of the month. The demand is expected to peak three days before Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year, which this year coincidently fall on the same day on Sunday. (rdf)
