President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has appointed seven new members of the Indonesian Honorary Medal Council, with Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto as the chairman.

Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said here Wednesday former head of the National Family Planning Board Haryono Suyono was now deputy chairman of the council.

He added that members included former defense minister Juwono Sudarsono, former presidential adviser Maj. Gen. (retired) TB Silalahi, and noted Muslim cleric Quraish Shihab.

Former Constitutional Court chief Jimly Asshiddiqie and University of Indonesia archaeology professor Eddy Sediawati are the other two members.

Julian said the appointment of the seven new council members was in line with the 2009 law on honorary medals and titles, which rules that two of the members must come from a military background, two from the academic community and there be three community leaders.
