The Indonesian Science Institute (LIPI) is planning to develop an integrated radar system, using locally produced radars, on the Sunda Straits to monitor and guide ships serving the area.
"There will be three radars stationed in the area," LIPI chairman Umar Anggara Jenie said Wednesday during a visit by Research and Technology Minister Suharna Suraprananta to the radars' testing ground in Anyer, Banten.
Umar said that the application of locally produced radars, called ISRA, would help the country ease its dependence on imported products, which were mostly costly.
Deputy Minister of Transportation Bambang Susantono, who was also present during the visit, said that the locally-made radars, which cost the Rp 2 billion (around US$200,000) each, were expected to be compatible with other radars used in the country's transportation system.
