Seven out of 12 airports controlled by state airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II suffered a combined total of Rp 114 billion (US$12.2 million) in losses last year.
AP II president director Edie Haryoto identified the losing operators as Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Sultan Mahmud Badarudin Airport in Palembang, Minangkabau International Airport in Padang, Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, Raha Haji Fisabillilah Airport in Tanjung Pinang, Sultan Thaha Airport in Jambi and Depati Amir Airport in Pangkal Pinang.
Topping the list is Minangkabau International Airport with Rp 37.3 billion in losses, followed by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Airport with Rp 32.3 billion and Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport with Rp 8.8 billion.
“The airports suffered losses because they had to spend on construction of the airport terminals they need to tackle the rapid increase in the number of passengers. They also had to extend runways,” Angkasa Pura II operational and technical director Tulus Pranowo told reporters on a sidelines of meeting with the House of Representative's commission VI on trade, industry, investment, and small, medium and state enterprises in Jakarta.
Tulus said the losses were temporary and the airports would make profits following their infrastructure improvement.
Despite the losses at the seven airports, the company raised Rp 1.5 trillion from five other airports, especially Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten, which contributed Rp 1.4 trillion to the company's revenue.

we lose probably tens of trillions of rupiah every year because of corruption and incompetence in the government agencies and yet we can only be lead around by a bunch of disgruntled cheer leaders cheering us to dethrone a president that has saved the country from financial ruin when he bailed out a bank.... I wonder if this country and its people seriously have its priorities right or know the difference between the rats and the mice... nobody is perfect but at least pick the lesser of 2 evils...
