The House of Representatives’ inquiry committee on the Bank Century case hit a dead end on Friday in its search for any illegal disbursement of the bailout fund to depositors in Bali.

The committee failed to gain permission from the executive director of the Bali branch of Bank Mutiara to obtain data on 20 depositors who the Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center suspect of illegally receiving the bailout fund.

Bank Century was rebranded Bank Mutiara last year.

“We are going to pursue alternative legal methods to get the data that we need,” the committee’s deputy chairman, Gayus Lumbuun from the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI-P), was quoted by kompas.com as saying after a meeting with the Bank Mutiara management in Denpasar, Bali.

A committee member, Tjatur Sapto Edi from the National Mandate Party (PAN), regretted the reluctance of the bank management to provide the inquiry committee access to the data.

The case evolves around a bailout that increased tenfold from its original estimate to Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million).

The inquiry committee toured Bali following reports of suspicious transactions involving 20 Bank Century depositors on the island between November and December 2008.

In a meeting with the Bali Police later in the day, the committee handed over documents of the suspicious transactions to the local police, expecting them to follow them up.
