Thousands of residents in East and South Jakarta were displaced from their homes after floodwater from the overflowing Ciliwung River submerged their neighborhood, a Jakarta official says.
“As of late Saturday, we had recorded 8.727 refugees in dozens of temporary shelters in East and South Jakarta,” Jakarta Social Services Agency chief Budihardjo said in a text message sent to The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
“Some of residents have returned to their homes but we expect the number of refugees could still increase.”
To support the displaced residents, Budihardjo said his agency was working with the Social Services Ministry and the Indonesian Red Cross in providing basic needs such as food, shelter and dry clothing.
“We have also set up 36 public kitchens for all the refugees,” he said.
