A statue depicting Barack Obama as a boy was removed from Menteng Park on Sunday, ahead of Obama’s visit to Indonesia next month
SD Besuki 1elementary school alumni chairman Hiramsyah S. Thaib said Monday the statue was removed to avoid further controversy about its presence in the park.
"We have coordinated the removal with the Jakarta government, the US Embassy in Jakarta and those who proposed the statue," he said as quoted by kompas.com.
The Rp 100-million statue is now stored at the elementary school in Menteng where Obama studied during his childhood in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, school's spokesman Ahmad Solikhin said the school was preparing to erect the statue.
"This morning, we will start constructing the cement foundation [for the statue],' Ahmad told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
"We hope the statue can be erected after two or three days."
US President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Indonesia late next month.
