The group opposing the placement of the Barack Obama statue in Menteng Park, Central Jakarta, officially withdrew their class-action lawsuit Wednesday, saying the city administration’s move to relocate the statue on Sunday was enough to satisfy them.
“We actually wanted to see the city administration make a public apology over their failure to facilitate a public discussion [before statue was erected],” Protus Tanuhandaru, a representative from the 50,000-member Facebook group “Take down the Barack Obama statue from Menteng Park ” told The Jakarta Post after a hearing at Central Jakarta District Court.
“However, since the statue has been physically removed, we no longer see any other substantive reason to continue with the lawsuit.”
Five plaintiffs — Heru Nugroho, Protus Tanuhandaru, Daniel Rudi Haryanto, Andes Soesman and FX Agung Bimo Sutedjo — filed the suit against the Jakarta governor, the Central Jakarta mayor and the Jakarta Parks and Cemeteries Agency, saying the statue, which resembles US president Barack Obama as a boy, didn’t deserve a place in the park and should be immediately removed.
