Floods have inundated at least 13,000 hectares of rice fields in Lampung, spoiling at least 2,900 hectares of ready-to-harvest crops, a local official said Thursday.
Agustini, a top official at Lampung Agriculture Agency, told tempointeraktif.com that the number of inundated fields might increase as the agency continued to collect more data.
She said the calculated losses from the spoiled crops were Rp 18.91 billion (around US$2 million).
The agency will report the losses to the central government to obtain seeds from the national reserve.
“We will compensate the farmers' losses with seeds and fertilizer so they can replant,” Agustini said.
The flooded rice paddies were located in Tanggamus, Central Lampung, East Lampung, South Lampung and Pringsewu regencies, most inundated by major rivers overflowing.
Floods have also hit houses in four villages in Candipuro district, South Lampung.
