Heavy rain hits Jakarta, inundates several areas

Heavy rain lashed Jakarta early Thursday morning, inundating a number of residential areas.

News portal kompas.com reported that rainwater had flooded residential areas in Bidara Cina and Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, reaching a height of up to 150 centimeters

Cucu Ahmad, spokesman for the city administration, said at least 510 people in the areas had taken refuge to higher ground.

Cucu added that the administration had prepared food packages for the victims.
