Two academics win justice selection

The House of Representatives’ Commission III on justice and human rights elected six justices Thursday evening, two of whom are academicians, following four days of rigorous selection tests.

The six were chosen from among 20 candidates.

Fifty-five of the 56 legislators on the commission voted in the selection, with each allowed more than one pick.

The candidate with the most votes was one of the six non-career judges, Salman Luthan. He earned the vote of all 55 voters.

Salman, 51, is a postgraduate lecturer at the Indonesian Islamic University (UII) in Yogyakarta.

The candidate with the next most votes was South Kalimantan High Court chief justice Soltoni Mohdally, with 53 votes.

Yulius, a judge at the Jakarta State Administrative Court, was third with 50 votes.

The rest of the justices-elect were Supreme Court Education and Training Center head Supandi with 45 votes, Makassar-based Hasanuddin University law professor Surya Jaya (42 votes), and South Kalimantan High Court deputy chief justice Achmad Yamanie (39 votes).
