PALEMBANG: The legal and human rights office of South Sumatra finalized the Indonesian citizenship status of 179 Chinese-Indonesians on Saturday.
As many as 184 Chinese-Indonesians had been on the list for the citizenship proposed by the Chinese-Indonesians Community Association (PSMTI) but five failed to meet requirements, according to office head Sutarmanto.
Musyrif Suwardi, the secretary of the provincial administration office, hoped the regents and mayors in the province would register the Chinese-Indonesians and help them in their citizenship rights.
Data on PSMTI as many as 392,600 Chinese-Indonesians live in South Sumatra. A hundred have yet to obtain their Indonesian citizenship. - JP
