Singapore Airlines, in collaboration with Forum Warga Kota Jakarta (FAKTA), has initiated Books on Wheels, a mobile library for street children, as part of the company's concrete actions to care for communities in areas in which it operates.

The Books on Wheels was officially launched last year by Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo in Kampung Sepatan, Rorotan subdistrict, Cilincing, North Jakarta. The launch of the mobile library was also attended by North Jakarta Mayor H. Bambang Sugiyono, Singapore Airlines Indonesia general manager Nam Lee Seng and FAKTA chairman Azas Tigor Nainggolan, city officials as well as unprivileged children in the Cilincing area. The mobile library provides children with books and magazines donated by employees of Singapore Airlines, said Singapore Airlines in a statement.

"This year, Singapore Airlines opted to take part in supporting educational programs for underprivileged and street children, particularly in the Jakarta area," said Nam Lee Seng.

Azas Tigor Nainggolan welcomed the launch of Books on Wheels, saying: "Underprivileged children will receive many benefits from the mobile library. The mobile library will also support our activities in providing alternative education for them," said Nainggolan.

Meanwhile, Fauzi Bowo said in his speech at the launch: "Jakarta, with its large population, certainly has complex issues to face. One example is education for its citizens. Therefore, the initiative of Singapore Airlines to provide a mobile library is really positive. I urge other companies to support the initiative so more children can enjoy the benefits." - JP
