Activists of the Free Gaza Movement visited the House of Representatives on Monday to seek political support from the legislative body for their efforts to help people in the isolated Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip.
Huwaida Arraf, leader of the movement, called on Indonesian people, government and parliament to support her group’s plan to send doctors, medical supplies, food, books, construction supplies and other humanitarian aid to Gaza.
“Today, bombs are not actively falling on Gaza. However, the situation today is just as bad because Israel has kept Gaza sealed,” she said.
Arraf and other activists have sailed to Gaza five times, confronting Israeli blockades.
But most boats carrying the activists were destroyed or confiscated by Israeli soldiers, she said.
“Now, instead of just sending one boat, we plan to sail a fleet.
“This is why I am in Indonesia. I am inviting Indonesian people to join us by sending a boat,” she said, adding that she had just received another boat from the Medical Emergency Rescue Committee Indonesia (MER-C).
Prosperous and Justice Party (PKS) legislator Al Muzammil Yusuf said that a number of Indonesian lawmakers would join the activists aboard one ship bound for Gaza in March.
The activists seek a meeting with Indonesian Red Cross chairman Jusuf Kalla.
