JAKARTA: The city education agency will merge state elementary schools in a bid to increase effectiveness of educational institutions and efficiency in the schools' management.

Initially, the administration will regroup 615 elementary schools into 114 units. Currently, there are 2,229 elementary schools in the city, according to the agency.

"For the sake of improving effectiveness of the educational institutions and management efficiency, we will merge some schools this year," the head of the education agency, Taufik Yudi Mulyanto, was quoted as saying Tuesday by news portal beritajakarta.com.

In a residential complex, he said, there were usually up to six elementary schools with six principals. With the integration plan there would only be one principal for all schools within a compound. - JP
