Seven high schools from Greater Jakarta will face final judgment today in the Climate Change Short Movie Competition organized by the Climate Project Indonesia.

The final leg of the competition will take place at the Salihara Community in South Jakarta.

Ratu Sovie from the Australian Embassy, also a volunteer of the Climate Project Indonesia, said that the finalists would present their works in front of a judge panel.

The judges are, among others, noted movie director Jay Subiakto and The Jakarta Post’s chief editor, Endy M. Bayuni.

The first competition is in cooperation with the Australian Embassy, the Indonesian Nobel Foundation and Perth Education City, Australia.

Dozens of high school students, individually or in pairs, sent in short films on climate change for the first stage of the selection process, which took place between Feb. 17 and 23.

The announcement of the winners will be on Feb. 27.

The first winner will fly to Perth, Australia, for five days in April.

The Climate Project is an NGO that provides training from former US vice president and Nobel Laureate, Al Gore, to volunteers from around the world on how to educate the public and raise awareness about climate change.

Established in 2006, the organization has branches in Australia, Canada, India, Spain, the UK, Mexico and Indonesia.

While The Climate Project Indonesia itself was built last year, a total of 54 people from various
backgrounds, such as those from NGOs, academics, media and government institutions, have undergone training from Al Gore and other international experts.

The Climate Project Indonesia’s activities include training, road shows to provinces and organizing green exhibitions.

People’s awareness about climate change has been increasing over the past few years, with environmental events, exhibitions and competitions held regularly.

The youth have also began to involve themselves in environmental issues by joining these competitions and becoming volunteers for environmental watchdogs.
