The resurgent appearance of British bands in the 1990s was highly influential for some people. More than a decade later, Gunver are still feeling the influence.
Formed in 2007, the five-piece band heavily borrow the signature sound of British rock bands like Doves or The Charlatans, with ambience resulting from extensive use of delay and reverb.
There aren't many indie bands in Indonesia that play this kind of music.
Gunver are Michael (vocals), Jeffry (guitar), David (guitar), Mario (bass) and Ade (drums), who all aim to inspire people.
While their music may sound quite depressing, they are all actually about hope and inspiration, says Jeffry.
"The core of Gunver's music is optimism, enlightenment, new hopes and celebration of human life," he says.
He adds Gunver try to make no limitation in writing music, although they are mainly influenced by British sound from the 1980s and 1990s.
"We also reference some noughties bands that we consider to sound classic, having character and original."
Gunver, which participated in the 2008 LA Lights Indiefest, recently released single Miles Away, containing four tracks. Notable engineer in the indie scene J. Vanco was the music producer for this single.
The Jakarta-based band plan to release their debut album Wonders of Enlightenment sometime in the middle of this year, Jeffry says.
It's not easy for Gunver to spare time to record their music because all of them are part-time musicians and full-time employees.
"We're still office workers," Jeffry laughs.
Michael, Jeffry and Ade are working in the creative and media industries, while David is an IT consultant and Mario is a marketing agent.
But being office workers do not stop them from making music, which come from within their soul.
As Jeffry says: "Music that is living, pure and honest comes from the unlimited freedom of the musician's soul in pouring his works."
