JAKARTA: Ragunan Zoo management limited the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags and Styrofoam in food packaging.

It also said it may no longer permit vendors to use environmentally unfriendly material.

Zoo spokesman Wahyudi Bambang said management had started introducing the policy in December last year and now it was campaigning to vendors and visitors.

"It is our responsibility to reduce the pollution level caused by plastic bags as well as prevent cancer, which may be caused by Styrofoam in some instances," he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com on Sunday.

If vendors violate the policy, zoo management will withdraw their permission to sell inside the compound, Wahyudi said. - JP
