Visitor dies after jumping into crater

KUPANG: Yohana Veronika Mole, 32, jumped to her death into a volcanic crater at the Kelimutu National Park, East Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday, the park authority says.

Witnesses said she had been pacing around the 40-meter-high crater before jumping inside.

"I thought she was cherishing the crater," said Benyamin Nuel, a park attendant, on Sunday.

Yohana's motives for jumping remain unknown, but her family suspects her mental illness.

"It's most likely my daughter killed herself as her mental illness relapsed. She had been suffering from schizophrenia for ten years," her mother Yuliana Moe Mole said.

The security wardens at the park faced found it difficult to remove the body because of the bad weather and strong sulphuric odor. - JP
