East Jakarta Mayor Murdhani says he expects more companies to install their own water treatment facilities, given the city's limited supply of clean water.

"This is a problem that needs to be resolved," he said Tuesday at the launch of the installation of a CuriEau water treatment system at dairy producer PT Frisian Flag Indonesia's (FFI) plant in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta.

"I know of some firms that operate their water treatment systems halfheartedly," Murdhani added.

The FFI's CuriEau system, the first of its kind in Asia, was jointly funded by the Netherlands-based company and the Dutch government to the tune of US$800,000.

"This system will reduce our deep-well water use by 50 percent, or around 220 cubic meters a day," said FFI human resources and corporate affairs director Sri Megawati.

She added FFI required 1,000 cubic meters of clean water a day, with 400 cubic meters drawn from wells.

Because of the CuriEau system, she went on, FFI had increased the proportion of its industrial wastewater that had been properly treated, up to 900 cubic meters.

FFI began installing the system last year and fired it up in January.

"The system's recycled water can be consumed directly," Sri said.

She added FFI used the treated water to run its boilers and coolants, as well as for cleaning.

The firm plans to install a similar system in its Ciracas plant, also in East Jakarta.

Dutch Ambassador Nikolaos van Dam said with FFI as a pilot project for the CuriEau system, he expected other companies to follow suit.

He added the Dutch government had not devised any plans for financial support for other interested companies.

Murdhani said he hoped FFI would make the most of the system.

He added many companies started out enthusiastic about their water treatment systems, but then stopped using them altogether, particularly in the rainy season.
