MEDAN, North Sumatra: The North Sumatra Central Statistics Agency (BPS) on Tuesday announced China was the biggest importer to North Sumatra after the United States.

Based on BPS data, the value of Chinese imported goods to North Sumatra in January this year reached US$56.7 million, or 28.94 percent from the total import value of $196.2 million in the same month.

North Sumatra BPS head Alimuddin Sidabalok said the import value of Chinese goods to the province in January this year increased by 2.12 percent compared to the corresponding period of last year.

He estimated that the increase in import value from China would further rise along with the implementation of the free-trade agreement.

"The import volume from China would further rise because Chinese products are relatively cheaper and affordable by the people." - JP
