Mulyani responds to Century inquiry result

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said Thursday she would study the House of Representatives’ recommendations on the Bank Century bailout that the legislative body says is flawed.

Speaking after a plenary session at the House, Mulyani claimed responsibility for the bailout policy, but avoided immediate response to the House’s recommendations, which include a legal process against those involved in the decision to salvage the ailing bank in November 2008.

"The priority of the whole process is the truth. And I as an individual and official will always try to hold the truth as priority," she said.

"I am fully responsible for the truth and in this case the truth to enforce the law to protect the people and the economy against volatilities and a possible crisis."

Mulyani defended the bailout, which could be perceived as a wrong policy from a political point of view.

"But only time will tell whether the policy is right or wrong," she said.

She supported a legal process against anyone who violated state regulations and caused state losses. "Therefore we respect the conclusions made yesterday… the President will convey the government’s view of the House’s findings," she said.

Mulyani refused to comment on the possibility she might be asked to step down. "I will not react further, please understand this. I will not react spontaneously to that view," she said.
