Thousands of supporters of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Boediono were enticed to receive something in return for rallying in front of the East Java House of Representatives building, one supporter said Thursday.
“I’ve been told that I would receive Rp 30,000 (US$3.20),” a supporter named Mujianto of Mojokerto, East Java, said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com news portal.
Mujianto said that he also received a flag and a T-shirt with images of the nation leaders before leaving his hometown with his group by truck at 7 a.m. on Thursday for the rally.
Meanwhile, another supporter, Suwarsono of Surabaya, said that a rally coordinator would hand him Rp 20,000 for joining the protest. “I will get the money after the rally.”
The peaceful rally ended within two hours.
Pros and cons rallies were conducted nationwide, following the two-day plenary meetings at the House of Representatives in Jakarta to decide the House stance over the troubled Bank Century’s bailout, which was authorized in November 2008.
On Wednesday night, the House made a decision on the 6.76 trillion bailout, with the majority of legislators who attended the meeting voting against the bailout policy.
Then Bank Indonesia governor Boediono, now Vice President, and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati have been criticized for approving the bailout.
