One of the National Mandate Party (PAN) founders says that despite President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's full support of the Bank Century bailout policy, the state officials responsible for the controversial policy must step down.
"If state officials are not trusted by the public they should resign. This is what usually happens in other countries, such as Japan," Amien Rais told reporters at the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Friday.
Amien was referring to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani and Vice President Boediono.
In November 2008, Mulyani and Boediono, who was the then Bank Indonesia governor, authorized the bailout that increased tenfold to Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million).
On Thursday, a day after the House voted against the bailout, Yudhoyono officially said that he fully supported the decision to bail out the bank amid the uncertainty of the global economic crisis.
