Thousands of people rallied outside the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) building in South Jakarta on Friday to demand the commission investigate Vice President Boediono and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati in connection with the Bank Century bailout, which the House of Representatives concluded was flawed.
Rejecting President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s defense of the bailout policy, the protesters urged the KPK to follow up the House recommendation of legal proceedings against Boediono and Mulyani, news portal kompas.com reported.
“The KPK should not be afraid of naming Boediono and Mulyani as key suspects in the Bank Century case,” the chairman of the Indonesian Youth Caucus (KMI), Edy Chumaidy, told protestors.
Activists from the People’s Conscience Communication Forum, Century Mania and Jayabaya University also attended the rally.
They also demanded Boediono and Mulyani resign to show accountability for the bailout.
The students asked KPK investigators to reject the President’s speech, in which he justified the bailout as an attempt to save the country’s economy from a global crisis.
