Bogor Regent Rachmat Yasin promised on Saturday to demolish hundreds of villas built in conservation areas, many of them belonging to state officials and businesspeople.
Rachmat said he the demolition could take place next month at the earliest.
“We have issued the third notification letters to the villa owners. It will take the order to clear the buildings 60 days to take effect according to the procedure,” he was quoted by Antara.
Earlier in the day, Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan asked the Bogor regent to immediately demolish the villas for violating the 1999 law on forestry, which bans any building from conservation forests.
“We expect the regent to take action against the villas. The ministry is only allowed to supervise implementation of the law,” Zulkifli said upon launching the Bogor Go Green II: Save Our Jakarta program in Lido, Bogor.
Zulkifli said the rampant construction of villas in the conservation areas had contributed to flooding that frequently hit Jakarta.
