Only five days after publicly unveiling its Android-geared data service, Indosat recorded nearly 1,000 subscribers of the new service, boosting confidence in its sales in the coming years.
“We are glad to see people's enthusiasm toward the Android-based service, which we have introduced in collaboration with six cell phone makers in seven big cities across Indonesia,” said Indosat’s chief marketing officer, Guntur S. Siboro.
The service was introduced simultaneously at different exhibitions in seven cities – Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Malang and Makassar – Indosat held the expo in collaboration with six manufacturuers of Android-enabled cell phones, comprising HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Huawei and Sony Ericsson.
According to Indosat’s head of Blackberry and consumer device division, Agung Wijanarko, the sales could reach 100,000 subscribers this year and could double in 2011.
“We are focusing on educating the market about Android through promotional and marketing efforts,” he said at the Mega Bazaar Computer 2010 in Jakarta on Sunday.
Android is a Google-acquired operating system with a unique open source philosophy that allows cell phone manufacturers to imbed the system in their handsets for free.
Android cell phone users are also free to customize applications on their gadgets, while application developers can create their own applications.
The Mega Bazaar Computer was held from March 3 to March 7 at the Jakarta Convention Center with 250 participating IT related companies, drawing a total crowd of approximately 187,000 people.
