Students join 'bike to school’ campaign

JAKARTA: A campaign on Sunday led by South Jakarta Mayor Syahrul Effendi to promote the use of bicycles drew 500 students from State High School SMA 6.

They rode from their school on Jln. Mahakam, passing the Senayan traffic circle in South Jakarta and ended at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta.

The mayor said residents should use bikes if the distance between their homes and their schools was less than 3 kilometers.

He said he was urging all schools to encourage the use of bicycles, as has been done by SMA 6 and Lab School.

Because of chronic traffic congestion, cycling to work or school has become the preferred choice for many residents.

Cycling community Bike to Work has successfully persuaded more than 5,000 residents in Greater Jakarta to leave their motor vehicles at home and cycle to work.
