KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: The West Timor Care Foundation has urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to discuss compensation for the oil spill in the Timor Sea with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd during his visit to Australia next week.

The foundation's director Ferdi Tanoni, told journalists the leak from the West Atlas oil well into the Timor Sea, which was temporarily plugged in early November last year, had discharged 40 million liters of crude oil, condensate and lead.

"The oil spill has severely affected the traditional fishermen because they have lost their livelihood, and threatened the natural environment," said Tanoni.

Tanoni urged Yudhoyono and Rudd to instruct related agencies from both countries to visit the affected areas and assess the damage. - JP
