Rupert Murdoch has told a conference in the Arab Gulf city of Abu Dhabi that censorship is counterproductive and says the region's citizens should be free to unleash their creative talents.

Murdoch was speaking at a media conference in the Emirati capital.

The oil-rich emirate hosted the conference Tuesday largely to highlight its push into the media sector, which includes investing in Hollywood films and building an office park to house foreign news agencies.

Despite its push into the industry, the country maintains tight control over mass media.
