The Bakauheni Seaport Security Police (KPPP) in Lampung arrested 20 Afghanis and an Iraqi attempting to cross to the port of Merak in Banten, West Java, on Tuesday morning.

Bakauheni KPPP chief Comr. I Made Bayu Suta told Antara state news agency the foreigners, who were traveling in a bus heading to Jakarta, did not have any travel documents in their possession.

The group were handed over to the Lampung Police, who decided to hand them to the local immigration office, where they will be detained pending a response from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Last week, the KPPP arrested 25 Afghanis also attempting to cross the Sunda Strait to Merak.

Lampung is known as one of the main routes taken by illegal immigrants heading to Jakarta to request help from the UN Human Rights Commission or IOM - both NGOs that have representatives in the capital.
