House of Representatives legislators hailed on Wednesday the police for their crackdown on terrorists in the country that killed long-time fugitive Dulmatin on Tuesday.
“Two thumbs up for the Densus 88’s success. Terrorism is the enemy of civilization,” said Ramadhan Pohan, a legislator from House Commission I on defense and foreign affairs, referring to the counterterrorism special detachment.
Ramadhan of the Democratic Party highlighted the fact that the successful operation took less than two weeks before the arrival of United States President Barack Obama.
Another House commission member, Rachel Maryam from the Greater Indonesian Movement Party (Gerindra), said she expected the counterterrorism squad to maintain its performance in the future, not just because of Obama’s planned visit.
A legislator from House Commission III overseeing law, human rights and domestic affairs, Fahri Hamzah from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), saluted the police but suspected the crackdown had something to do with Obama’s trip to Indonesia.
“The United States’ intelligence operation is quite solid in Indonesia,” he said.
Fellow PKS politician, Bukhori Yusuf, also from the Commission III, said the police were motivated to restore their tarnished image following a series of abuse of power cases involving the force.
“Those cases include a conflict with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the shooting on farmers in South Sumatera and clashes with students during recent rallies,” he said.
