AKARTA: Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih is optimistic the government will be able to enforce a controversial regulation completely banning cigarette advertising, despite strong opposition from the tobacco industry and farmers.
“I have every reason to be optimistic,” she said after attending a seminar in Jakarta on Tuesday, adding that the draft of the regulation was almost ready.
The regulation is meant to be implementation guidelines for a section on tobacco in the health law passed last year.
The regulation covers provisions regarding no-smoking areas, warnings on the dangers of smoking, prohibition of selling cigarettes to minors and a total ban on the advertising of tobacco products.
Last week, thousands of tobacco farmers from Central Java demonstrated their opposition to the draft that they fear may spell an end to their livelihoods.
But the legislation has received support from the National Commission on Child Protection, which says children have become targets of cigarette advertising and that more and more children are becoming addicted to cigarettes. — JP
