JAKARTA: Five new street signs have been put up on the overpass linking Jl. Rasuna Said and Jl. Latuharhari, Central Jakarta, following an accident that killed three in the area two weeks ago.
A speeding Toyota RAV4 minivan broke through the wall of a house in the area causing the deaths of three of its five passengers, and serious injuries to the two others on Feb. 26.
Travelling at 120 kilometers per hour, the van was heading for Menteng when it took a left turn after the bridge.
After mounting the sidewalk, the van crashed through the front wall of the official residence of Religious Affairs Ministry inspector general M.Z. Suparsa on Jl. Sumenep.
The van overturned and ended up in the property’s front yard.
The Jakarta Police had not concluded the exact cause of the accident.
The police recorded 6,896 traffic accidents last year with 1,016 fatalities and 7,000 injuries. The number of traffic accidents was a 7.5 percent increase from 6,393 accidents reported in 2008. — JP
