Bantul legislator faces corruption charges

BANTUL, Yogyakarta: Prosecutors have named a Bantul council member as a graft suspect for allegedly embezzling funds for reconstruction for the May 2006 earthquake.

Because of the allegations against him, Tur Haryanto has not been sworn in as council member.

"We charged him with fraud and embezzlement and he could face a four-year sentence if found guilty," public prosecutor Agus Sunagyo said on Wednesday.

In the indictment, Tur allegedly skimmed between Rp 5 million and Rp 20 million from each Rp 80 million reconstruction fund packet destined for quake victims. - JP
