JAKARTA: The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas Anak) on Thursday called on the government to speed up the issuance of a regulation completely banning tobacco advertising.

The draft regulation, which has faced fierce protests from the tobacco industry and farmers, treats tobacco products as addictive substance that should be tightly controlled.

"We want to see the regulation issued as soon as possible," commission chairman Seto Mulyadi said in Jakarta on Thursday.

"We see the tobacco industry has been stepping up its promotions and the health of our younger generation has been put at risk."

The regulation will include a total ban on tobacco advertising, smoking in public places, and cigarette sales to minors, as well as a ban on sponsorship by cigarette companies. Individual cigarette sales by vendors will also be prohibited. - JP
